Gamble Acres: Supernatural in 1:6 Scale

  In the Season 2 episode "Born Under A Bad Sign," Sam finds himself covered in blood in an unfamiliar motel room with damask curtains and the blandest landscapes known to man.  I chose this room to be Benny Lafitte's room in the magical A-Frame. Above, a behind-the-scenes view of the room set up in my disassembled A-Frame.  Each of my dioramas takes up a minimum of two (usually 3 or 4) rooms of The Barbie A-Frame Dreamhouse, so I take the majority of photos in the disassembled doll house.   The Larson's Landing Motel re-uses the large headboard seen many times on Supernatural.  In fact, Benny shares this headboard with Sam Winchester. The bedding is also reused frequently.  I originally made Benny's green chenille dotted bedspreads for a different motel room.   I made the mid-century modern wallpaper on my computer.  The damask drapes and matching lampshade are scrapbook paper.  To the right you can see the unfinished fishing-theme...

  I chose the Kingpin Motel from Season 1 as John Winchester's room in the A-Frame.  Unlike my other miniature motel rooms, which tend to be bright and cheery, I deliberately tried to make John's room grubby, with stained furniture, rug, and drab beige bedding to give the room a worn look.  I even made John his own set of pillows that are flattened as if they've seen better days.   Below, you can see the bowling pin-themed room divider on the original set: John's suite has a bedroom divided from the living area with a door and a frosted glass window adorned with bowling balls and pins.  The artwork on the wall is black and white photographs of people, mostly bowling.  I used art from the Mattel website to create miniature photographs.  The red upholstered chair, tan recliner, small television, and mid-century modern coffee table are all copies of furniture in the living area. I almost always take artistic liberties with my mini motel rooms.  ...

I chose the Aviary Motel from season 3, episode 10 for Sam's room in the A-Frame.  Who could resist its totally whack bird theme?  This mini motel room also featured in a flashback of scenes from that episode, titled "Dream A Little Dream Of Me." Below, Dean and Sam prepare to drink a potion of African Dream Root.  Behind them you can see the giant headboard featured in this and many other motel rooms, the ornate lamp, forest-y artwork, and very busy bird-patterned wallpaper.  My mini version of the scene, below.  The art behind Sam is a miniature of a Bob Ross painting.  The art behind Dean is a miniature of a vintage Mattel Little Theater playset.  The shag rug on the floor is a hand towel bought from a thrift store.  The blue bedspreads are cloth napkins, also thrifted.  I could not find anything even vaguely similar to the wallpaper, so I designed my own using bird and leaf stencils.  Dean's room in the magical A-Frame is heavily based on the Stampede Motel from Season 13.   The "Wild Bill Suite" with cowboy memorabilia delighted Dean.   Over the years, there were many Western-themed motel rooms on Supernatural.  I combined elements from several of them to create a room that suited Dean's love of all things Wild West. The headboards are based on a motel cabin from Season 8, Episode 16, "Remember The Titans" (below.) The plaid bedding is similar to the Stampede Motel, where Dean, awakened unexpectedly, proved he was an "angry sleeper." Dean's room includes a spacious sitting area with a fieldstone fireplace.  The mantel displays a souvenir postcard from the Winchester brothers' annual vacation in Las Vegas, and a photo of the boys with Bobby Singer.
