Special Event: Dean's Surprise 39th Birthday Party

Sam's plan to get Dean to his surprise birthday party was simple:  tell Dean they had a monster to hunt.  As the two brothers approached Plastic Paddy's, Sam steered Dean down an alley so the sign out front of the bar wouldn't give away the surprise.

Inside, the bartender, Doyle, was ready for the party to start.  The bar was well-stocked.  Most of the guests were hidden in the back room.

Dean and Sam were just a few steps away from the side door of the pub when Dean began asking questions.
"Why are we stopping here?"

"Why not?"  Sam countered.  It seemed best to keep things simple.
"Because we've got a hunt.  That's why not,"  Dean argued.
"Jeez,"  Sam said.  "Can't a guy buy his big brother a drink on his birthday?"

"Come on.  Just one quick drink.  Since when do you turn down free alcohol?"  Sam manhandled Dean through the door before he could question things any further.

Shouts of 'Surprise!' and 'Happy Birthday!' greeted them as all the family members who could squeeze themselves behind the bar jumped up.  Sam was pleased to see that Dean was truly surprised.
"What is this?  A party?  You tricked me, Sammy!"  Dean's voice was gruff with suppressed emotion.
"This is awesome."

Knowing his Western-obsessed brother would want to be dressed to match the party theme, Sam had snuck into Dean's room and stolen his cowboy outfit.  He'd packed them in the bag they normally carried weapons in, so Dean could change for the party.

A few minutes later, Dean was dressed in full old west regalia.
"This is awesome, Sam,"  he enthused again.  "The only thing that would make this any better is--"

"A drink?"  Sam interrupted, handing Dean a tall glass garnished with a hot pink paper parasol.  He couldn't resist giving Dean a sweet and fruity 'girly' cocktail as his first drink of the party.

"Your hat,"  Mary Winchester announced, handing Dean his beloved ten-gallon cowboy hat.
"Thanks, Mom!"

"Let's get this party started,"  Dean yelled.

Doyle was in his element, pouring the usual shots and beers favored by Plastic Paddy's regulars, but also mixing cocktails for the partygoers.  It had been years since he'd had the chance to use some of the recipes.

Once a barkeep, always a barkeep.  Ellen Harvelle checked in with Doyle to make sure he wasn't getting overwhelmed by the crowd.  Free drinks were extremely popular.

Meanwhile, Bobby tried to keep the locals out of the area set aside for VIPs.
"Oma,  this is the VIP section."
"Bobby, I am a VIP."

Sam had thought of everything:  knowing how much Dean loved pie, instead of a birthday cake, he'd had a pie bar catered by another of Dean's favorites:  the Biggerson's All-You-Can-Eat chain restaurant.  It was a big success...

...Especially with Dean.

The jukebox played the usual classic rock, and, in keeping with the party theme, a selection of classic country western hits by artists like Patsy Cline, Merle Haggard, and Hank Williams, inspiring some of the guests to get up and dance.

Bobby Singer made another sweep of the VIP section.
"Magnus, Lolly, you do know this area is reserved for the VIPs?"

"Of course it is,"  Magnus Cheatham said.
"Bobby, that's who we are,"  his wife, Learlene 'Lolly' Cheatham chimed in.

"Balls!"  Bobby muttered.  "I give up."

Sam had rented a photo booth for the partiers' use. It was a delight seeing fellow 1:6 scale enthusiasts join in the party!  Below is a sampling of the "wanted posters" made from the photo booth, and other great examples of the creativity of Dollstagram:

Our story continues below...

The vampire, Benny Lafitte, savored a slice of pie and a good number of drinks, human delights he never thought he'd experience again.  Benny was grateful to be a part of Dean's celebration.  After all the two had been through in Purgatory, he thought of Dean as a brother.
Still, Benny couldn't help but notice the absence of Rufus Turner, Missouri Mosely, and Pastor Jim Murphy.  The hunters had refused to accept a vampire into their family, and it seemed they weren't changing their minds, even for Dean's birthday party.  Benny knew Dean wouldn't be able to tolerate the rift for much longer.  Something would have to be done about it.

Most of the hunters had opted for the 'casual' dress code instead of 'western', but the Winchester's neighbor, Peyton, clearly understood the assignment and went all out with a belt buckle suitable for a rodeo rider, cowboy hat, and vintage cowboy boots.

Peyton finished their look with a silver and turquoise necklace from an up-and-coming designer.

John Winchester found himself brooding in a corner, nursing a glass of whiskey.  The happiness he felt at seeing his sons surrounded by family and friends was bittersweet when he thought of all the birthdays his boys had missed out on celebrating.
Remembering the stern lecture he'd gotten from Mary, however, John forced a smile and rejoined the party.  This was Dean's day and he'd be damned if he cast even a hint of a shadow over it.

Music played, drink flowed, and someone had even disabled the coin operated ball return on the pool table so all the games were free.  (Don't worry;  Sam paid Doyle handsomely for renting out the entire pub, and included generous tips for all the staff...Using the magic, self-replenishing wallets all the hunters had received when they arrived in Hunter's Heaven.)

The wealthy, overconfident Magnus Cheatham didn't know it, but he was about to get hustled by Bobby Singer.  When are you going to learn not to underestimate Bobby, Magnus?

More people crowded the improvised dance floor as the evening progressed.

The jukebox played 'Blue Shadows On The Trail' as the party finally wound down and the staff began cleaning up.

A tipsy Dean gave a slightly slurred but heartfelt thank you to the guests as Doyle turned off the green shamrock lights.  It was an awesome party, the best birthday he'd ever had.

"Who turned off the lights?  Hey, my beer is empty.  Where'd everybody go?"

"Oh, well.  G'night."

"Help me carry our lil' cowboy back to the bunkhouse?"  John asked Bobby.
"Yeah, he's all partied out,"  Bobby said fondly as a snore rumbled from under the brim of Dean's ten-gallon hat.

Arizona moon keep shining
From the desert sky above
You know pretty soon
That big yellow moon
Will light the way back to the one you love.

Blue shadows on the trail
Little cowboy, close your eyes and dream
All of the doggies are in the corral
All of your work is done
Just close your eyes and dream little pal
Dream of someone

Blue shadows on the trail
Soft wind blowing through the trees above
All the other little cowboys
Back in the bunkhouse now, so
Close your eyes and dream

(Blue Shadows (On The Trail) by Randy Newman)
