Hunters are part of a rare group of people who are aware of the supernatural world that exists, hidden from the average person.  Hunters, as the name implies, hunt supernatural creatures that prey upon humanity:  vampires, werewolves, ghosts, witches, and demons, to name a few.
Our story begins with hunters who died violent on-the-job deaths, inexplicably brought back to life in a modest suburban neighborhood.

Of the eight original hunters returned to life in "Hunter's Heaven", three left the A-frame and were not heard from again.  The remaining hunters worried that if they strayed too far from the house, they, too, might disappear.

John Winchester arrived in the A-frame, another hunter brought back to life by forces as yet unknown.

Unlike the other hunters, John didn't seem to have been brought back to life from heaven.  He only remembered hell, where his soul had been condemned, the result of a bargain John made with a demon in exchange for the life of his mortally injured son, Dean.

Missouri Mosely, a hunter with psychic powers, explained the new afterlife to John as best she could.

John and Ellen Harvelle set out to locate one of the hunters who'd disappeared.  They found Caleb Chesney with his girlfriend, Kenia, a 'civilian' who knew nothing of the supernatural world.

After a tense confrontation, Caleb admitted that he and the other two hunters had left the A-frame on purpose to get away from hunting, and lead new lives.

Ellen and John promised that they would leave Caleb and Kenia alone, allowing them to continue their normal lives.

Back at the A-frame, John was introduced to Morgan Magenta, who lived next door.  The other hunters had been making acquaintances in the neighborhood, trying to blend in and seem like normal suburbanites.

Missouri, Bobby, and Ellen all seemed fond of Morgan, but John was instantly suspicious.  He investigated Morgan and became convinced that she was an enemy:  a dangerous, powerful witch.

John's wife, Mary, was brought back to life, and had an emotional reunion with her husband after more than thirty years apart.

John soon became suspicious of Mary, and confided in some of the other hunters about her.   John's long-time friend, hunter Jim Murphy, advised him to trust Mary and to show her compassion.  Jim and Bobby Singer agreed that Mary was likely suffering from PTSD due to her violent, untimely death.

The A-frame began giving hints that another hunter would soon be arriving in the afterlife.  The hunters were shocked to discover the next one to join them would be Dean Winchester.   John and Mary's son was a legendary hunter who, along with his brother Sam, had saved the world more than once.  He was a young man in the prime of life.  They had all hoped he would live for many more years.

Ellen confided to Bobby that she had hoped the next arrival would be her husband, a hunter who had died many years ago.  Ellen had lost both her husband and daughter to violent deaths caused by demons, and wondered when her own family might be reunited.  Bobby tried his best to comfort her.
Meanwhile, Mary finally told John the truth:  she had been raised as a hunter.  It was a life she'd never wanted, and when she met John, she determined to escape hunting and lead a normal life.

Mary only got a few short years of normality.  The supernatural world came after John and Mary's infant son, Sam, and Mary had been murdered while trying to protect him.  With no prior knowledge of monsters, John learned to hunt and set out on a quest for revenge, training Sam and Dean as hunters, too, and bringing them up in the very life Mary had tried to escape.

John felt utterly betrayed by Mary's revelation.

Dean arrived in the afterlife, creating a stir among the residents of Gamble Acres.  Bobby shared the research the hunters had done:  the A-frame belonged to Dean, along with a vast fortune.

Dean had heart-to-heart talks with both of his parents, but when John warned him to stay away from the witch next door, Dean chose not to take his advice.

Dean discovered that Morgan Magenta was in fact a powerful witch, but found himself intrigued by her instead of viewing her as an enemy.  The two became lovers.

It was the middle of the night when Dean returned to the A-frame from Morgan's magical garden.  Seeing lights on in both the back and the front of the downstairs, he thought to himself, doesn't anyone sleep in this house?

Dean crouched down until he got past the windows.

It was convenient, he thought, that his room had a tree right outside.  He could just climb up...

...And onto the balcony.   Home free, with no one the wiser!

Missouri Mosely was in the living room, unable to sleep, trying to decide between reading a book or watching a movie.

"Dean Winchester, you horndog,"  she murmured to herself.  "That boy makes me wish I wasn't psychic."

Mary Winchester was doing a little light reading of her own before bed.

She heard a knock at the door.

"Come on in."

"I see you're still awake,"  John greeted her.

They were the first words he'd spoken directly to her since the morning Dean had arrived.

"Oh, we're back on speaking terms now?"

"You're my wife, and I still love you."

"I love you too, John.  Please, sit down."

"I can't lie,"  John said.  "I love you.  But right now, I hate you, too."

Mary took a deep breath before she answered, willing herself not to show any emotion.

"You're not the first person to tell me that recently.  So, what do you want to do?"

"Well, clearly we need to work on our marriage.   We ought to get out of town for a few days.  Here, take a look at this."  John handed Mary an envelope.

"You want to get away together for a few days...On a hunt?"   Mary took the envelope, bemused.  This might be John's sweet, goofy attempt at an apology, she thought.  Well, the John Winchester she'd married all those years ago, she revised.  Not the man her husband had become.  He was deadly serious.  She watched him get up to leave.

"I found a case,"  John said.  "You're a hunter.  So... Let's hunt."

"Familiarize yourself with my notes, and pack accordingly.  We leave first thing in the morning."
